Medical Tourism to Costa Rica Attracting the Self Insured
Medical Tourism and Travel is used by approximately one percent of all self insured corporation in the United States. But this number is sure to grow as the benefits and mechanics of combining a self insurance plans with Medical Tourism are worked out by Companies Like Health Check Costa Rica, and other partners like the Promed council of Costa Rica a non profit organization in part funded by the Costa rican Government for the promotion of Costa Rican medicine and as an impartial arbiter of complaints and disputes within Costa Rica.
However the institutional inertia is a formidable force and even though there are at least 3 world class JCI accredited hospitals here to choose from here in Costa Rica the move towards including quality care abroad in their plans remains slow.
One of the stickiest parts of this process is how to entice emplotyees in these plans to consider the medical Travel option. When asked at the Recent Intenational Medical Travel Summit in Costa rica recently about this one of the industry leaders in insurance issues, Mr. Robert Repke answered simply to the question of how to make this an attractive option said simply “You pay Them” Well this seemingly simple answer to a complex issue nails the issue right in its heart. There are Myriad Ways to incentivise employees into considering medical Tourism as an option not the least of which is to offer lower deductibles and lower pay ins to the system. Both sides win often a vacation is thrown in to the mix and there are still vast savings over US costas and bothe employer and employee save in the deal.
Medical Tourism for corporations is a win win deal for all except of course the greed heads in the United States who have made the sytem intolerably expensive and complicated.
