Medical Travel to Costa Rica
Medical Travel has become serious business in Costa Rica as evidenced by the most recent Medical Travel Summit held here in San Jose in May. Among the participants were ourselves of course, Health Check Costa Rica, but also a number of luminaries from all over the world who contributed positively to the maturing nature of what remains a very nascent industry. This industry has been able to take hold and gain people’s confidence really from all the ground work that has come before mainly related to the Tourism industry and the selection of Costa Rica as a favored retirement destination by such groups as the AARP, and International living Magazine. Before the economy went bust worldwide Costa Rica was a boomtown, and inevitably will become one again.
People are often intimidated by the idea of travelling to a foreign country, and travelling for a medical procedure is even more daunting. I originally drove to Costa Rica from Boston 7 years ago after spending nine months with my sister at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, and I can remember being quite nervous the entire journey and even my first year or so in Costa Rica. I guess this is natural because really the environment and language is so strange and new and unfortunately Americans and Canadians have the very nasty habit of lumping all the Central American countries together in one ephemeral conclusion that they have amalgamated through sound bites and snippets of gossip or barely heard reports into one giant nightmarish soup of Nicaraguan Sandinistas, Arms for Contras, Ollie North, Guatemala gang violence, Honduran unrest, and Mexican kill squads.
Well let me help to set the record straight. Costa Rica is the most peaceful place I have ever seen, if I hear an ambulance I am surprised, I think there may have been a police siren passing by once last year, and every time a plane passes overhead I am surprised at how surprised I am. Honestly if these people were any more laid back they would be sleeping. However they are friendly and welcoming and get this folks, they have the second highest average life span in the world. They also have a socialized medicine system that takes care of everybody, and they have an educated class that strives for excellence especially in the realm of Medical care. Being only a few hours from most major American cities coupled with a peaceful stable country and unparalleled natural beauty has afforded Costa Rica the opportunity to become a country of incredible vigor mainly from the explosion of investment and tourist dollars.
Anybody considering Medical Travel to Costa Rica should look up the statistics and take heart. A country with the second longest life span in the world must obviously be doing something right. Also in case you were not aware Costa Rica gave up its army over 60 years ago and guess where most of that money flows now. That’s right, Health care and education.
